Birdwatching Club

Welcome to the Nyungwe Bird Conservation Club

Discover Birds. Empower Communities. Protect Nature. Nestled in the lush heart of Nyungwe National Park, the Nyungwe Bird Conservation Club is more than just a birdwatching group, it’s a vibrant community movement. Founded in 2009 by renowned bird conservationist Claver Ntoyinkima, our club brings together passionate youth, dedicated local guides, and visiting nature lovers to protect, celebrate, and learn from Rwanda’s incredible birdlife.

We aim to:

Promote bird conservation by raising awareness about the vital roles birds play, from natural pest control to pollination, especially among children and rural communities.

Educate and empower local youth through hands-on training in bird identification, sound recording, and ecological observation.

Foster sustainable livelihoods by mentoring young people to become freelance bird guides, offering ecofriendly income alternatives that protect rather than exploit the forest.

To grow a new generation of naturalists, especially among youth who are proud and knowledgeable protectors of Nyungwe and Kivu’s bird-rich habitats.

To promote community stewardship by using birds as daily reminders of the beauty, balance, and health of our ecosystems.

To connect conservation with local well-being, showing how protecting nature can uplift communities through eco-tourism, education, and opportunity.

Early morning and afternoon bird walks & sound recording in the rainforest, engaging youth and visitors in biodiversity monitoring.

Training and mentorship for future bird guides, empowering students with career-ready skills. ·

Community outreach in schools and villages to share knowledge and spark curiosity about Rwanda’s birds.
